Our new Write for Life campaign focuses on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- a slender piece of land in the far north that is the birthing ground for the 150,000 strong Porcupine Caribou Herd every summer. Our government wants to drill for oil there, even though it would provide only 1.5 percent of the oil we use. And the native people who depend on the caribou are frightened that this will end their way of life. We have cool little postcards for you to write your Congressperson, a color poster and background materials. Great for your church, school or youth group! | "We all know that a good 30 percent of a teenager's waking hours are spent in the shower (o.k., it just seems like that much to those of us waiting outside for our turn...). In a typical teen-occupied household, as much as 75 percent of the hot water is used for showers. By cutting your shower time in half, over a year's time you can keep 400 pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere (it's a prime global warming gas). Click here to see how we did the math. Recycle every aluminum can you see—if you don't, it's like filling it half full of gasoline and pouring it out. That's how much energy is saved by recycling one drink can! Get your congregation involved in the Drive the Car Fast (as in "less") Campaign. Walking somewhere in our fossil-fuel dependent society is an act of Christian discipleship. Might also keep us from going to war over oil.
