Every 30 Seconds Malaria is one of the world's deadliest diseases. In Africa, home to the most potent strain of the parasite, it kills 3000 children a day-or one every 30 seconds. Of course it also affects many adults-around the world, 500 million people will suffer a bout of malaria this year, bringing suffering and economic hardship on them and their families (Africa loses up to $12 billion annually due to the disease.) The New Community Project is working with partners in Sudan to support women's groups in making mosquito nets. We purchase material and sewing machines and provide training for seamstresses. We also help women purchase their own sewing machines once they've completed their course. An added benefit is that the women can use the skills they've gained in other income-producing activities, keeping them from having to resort to demeaning work such as making home brew. Help us help them! As with all our special funds, 100 percent of donations go to the projects themselves-really! Click here for educational/promotional background materials. Contact NCP for flyers and posters. NCP director David Radcliff knows more about malaria than he wishes he did-he had a case of the disease after a trip to Central America . Chills, fever, loss of appetite (he must have been sick!), drained, disoriented (even more than usual!). Fortunately, he had pills to take to end his bout-millions of the world's people have no such luxury. And what medicines there are have often been out-foxed by the various forms of the parasite, as they are now immune to many preventatives. |
